Instead, the West should focus on Taiwan’s ability to deter future military attacks by China, he said.
The One China Policy is a diplomatic acknowledgment of China’s position that there is only one Chinese government in Beijing. Under this policy, the United States recognizes China, not the island of Taiwan, and enters into a formal relationship.
However, the policy does not support China’s position, and Washington maintains “strong informal” ties with Taiwan.
