Several journalists at Global News learned they lost their jobs on Thursday in a layoff round by parent company Corus.

Unifor, the union representing more than 800 Corus employees, said the move eroded already minimal newsrooms across the country and endangered democracy.

“It has become very difficult for media professionals to face news of layoffs and layoffs on a regular basis,” said Lana Payne, National Director of Unifor. “Journalists are the backbone of our democracy. We need to save local news by investing in newsrooms instead of cutting them off.”

So far, the cuts have affected online and online video journalists, according to Unifor.

The Daily Hive learned that job cuts primarily affected jobs in Alberta and eastern Canada. Corus was also set to begin the salary review process on his March 1, postponed to spring from November 2022. It’s not clear if the layoffs are related to the planned pay increases.

Several reporters who lost their jobs shared the sad news on Twitter on Thursday.

The Daily Hive reached out to Corus for comment.
