When 19-year-old Suleman Dawood boarded the Ocean Gate submersible Titan, he always carried one precious item with him. It’s a Rubik’s Cube.

“He said, ‘I’m going to solve a Rubik’s Cube on the Titanic at 3,700 meters,'” his mother, Christine Durwood, said in a television interview. BBC.

The teenage boy, who has a Guinness World Records entry, was also on board with his father, Shazada, who had his camera ready to capture the moment.

Christine said her son, a student at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, has never gone anywhere without his Rubik’s Cube and was able to solve the puzzle in just 12 seconds. He liked it so much that he even dressed up as Rubik’s Cube for Halloween.

The family had planned to see the Titanic earlier. However, their plans were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the British family had been vacationing in Canada for about a month, Sullman and Shazada were joined by British billionaire Hamish Harding, Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush and French explorer Paul Rush. He boarded the submarine with Henry Nargiolet and others.

Christine was to see the wreckage with her husband, a Titanic enthusiast. But she said she gave up her seat for her son, who was looking forward to her trip.

“Then I backed off and gave them space to set.” [Suleman] I woke up because he really wanted to go,” she recalled.

Christine and her daughter had boarded the Canadian ship Polar Prince, a submarine support ship, and had come to see him off. But when she learned the ship had lost contact with the submarine, Christine said:

“When I crossed 96 hours, I lost hope.”

A Coast Guard spokesperson said Thursday afternoon that debris matching the Oceangate Titan was found about 500 meters from the Titanic’s bow. All five crew members are believed to have died.

A Coast Guard representative said at a press conference, “The debris site coincided with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel.”

A release from the Ocean Gate Expedition expresses sadness that the five people on board were not found alive.

“We mourn the loss of life,” they said.

The Darwoods are part of Pakistan’s wealthiest family. Shazada was the vice chairman of Engro Corporation, a Pakistani fertilizer conglomerate.

In a post on Twitter, the Darwood Foundation said, “With a heavy heart and deep sadness we mourn the passing of our Trustee Shahzada Darwood and his beloved son Suleman Darwood. This tragic event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dawood family at this difficult time.”

The Foundation is hosting devotionals on a livestream. YouTube channel Tuesday, June 27 at 9:30 a.m. ET.
