Elon Musk changes Twitter logo from blue bird to white X | CBC News

Elon Musk and Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino on Monday unveiled the social media platform’s logo, which replaces the familiar blue bird symbol with a white ‘X’ on a black background.

“X is here! Let’s do this,” Yaccarino tweeted, posting a photo of the logo projected onto the company’s San Francisco office.

Both Yaccarino and Musk have an X logo on their Twitter handles, but Twitter’s blue bird is still visible across the platform.

While several users criticized the new logo, #GoodbyeTwitter trended on the platform in reference to the old logo. In a post on Sunday, Musk said he wanted to change Twitter’s logo and polled his millions of followers to see if they were in favor of changing the site’s color scheme from blue to black.

He posted a photo of a stylized X on a space-themed black background. He also referred to the “temporary X logo,” tweeting that “soon we’ll be saying goodbye to the Twitter brand and gradually saying goodbye to all the birds.”

When asked what tweets would be called under “X”, Musk replied “X”. The original his Twitter logo was designed by his team of three in 2012.

“The logo is simple, balanced, and designed to be legible at a very small size, almost like a lowercase ‘e,'” tweeted Martin Glasser, one of the designers.

Just weeks before closing the Twitter acquisition last year, Musk said that buying the company would accelerate his ambitions to develop “any app” called “X” by three to five years.

Musk bought x.com from PayPal in 2017 and said it had “emotional value.” Mr. Musk said he co-founded x.com as an online bank in 1999, which later turned into PayPal.

The official page on Twitter’s platform has been renamed to ‘X’, but the domain x.com is inactive.

“X is the future state of unlimited interactivity centered around audio, video, messaging and payments/banking, creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services and opportunities,” Yaccarino tweeted on Sunday.

Yaccarino, the former head of advertising at NBCUniversal, who took over as Twitter CEO on June 5, came at a time when the social media platform was looking to reverse a plunging ad revenue.

Since its acquisition of Twitter, the company has faced turbulent times, with headcount cuts, advertiser losses and the meteoric rise of Threads, Meta’s response to Twitter.
